Metsä Group operates several power plants to supply energy to its production mills, and some of its mills generate energy alongside their primary production. Ensuring efficient energy production is essential for managing operational costs and emissions. Previously, the data was scattered across multiple systems and sites, making reporting a time-consuming and error-prone task.
“We wanted our experts and plant management to be able to focus on finding ways to improve our energy production instead of spending their time on managing data from multiple sources. We also wanted to create a single source of data for various reporting requirements”, says Metsä Group’s VP Energy, Pirita Mikkanen.
An end-to-end Power BI solution to improve visibility, decision-making and productivity
Norrin worked with Metsä Group to develop Energy Production Reporting Automatization (EPRA). EPRA provides experts and business leadership with consistent reporting on energy production, fuel usage and CO2 emissions.
It is an end-to-end solution that sources data from the plant’s automation system and other sources. It then consolidates and enhances the data on IIoT and data platforms, carries out the necessary data modeling, and delivers BI dashboards for a broad set of users.
To include older plants that lack IIoT and automation technologies in EPRA, Norrin developed a Power App-based UI that enables manual data input. The same app can also be used to update the data in case of errors caused by malfunctions or other issues.
“EPRA has improved our understanding of how our plants operate and it has simplified both internal and external reporting. Working with Norrin has been great. They clearly had our, and the project’s, interests in mind, and their tireless efforts to ensure a shared understanding made our collaboration smooth,” Mikkanen says.
