Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is a modern reporting platform that supports data-driven decision-making in organizations. With it, information becomes transparent, understandable, and action-oriented across the entire organization. Power BI enables fast and reliable responses to changes in the business environment and supports data-driven leadership at all levels, from managers to the executive team.

Power BI’s strengths are based on its user-friendliness, scalability, and tight integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. Connections to, among others, Excel, Teams, Azure, and Microsoft Fabric are excellent, allowing all of the organization’s data work to be brought under a single reporting framework with minimal effort.

Key features of Power BI

Power BI offers versatile tools for data modeling, analysis, and visualization. With it, you can combine data from different sources, build clear reports, and share insights within the organization securely and in a controlled manner.

  • DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) – a powerful calculation language for building measures and business logic.
  • Interactive visualizations – users can explore reports dynamically and find answers quickly.
  • Extensive data source support – Fabric, SQL, Excel, SharePoint, Azure, API interfaces, and more than 100 other data sources.
  • Security and governance – role-based access control and comprehensive data protection features.

Typical use case of Power BI

Power BI is suitable for almost all business analytics and reporting needs. Typical use cases include:

  • Sales monitoring: sales reports, customer segmentation, product profitability
  • Financial reporting: automated monthly reports, budget comparisons, cash flow analyses
  • Customer analytics: segmentation and modeling of customer behavior
  • Operational monitoring: production efficiency, inventory turnover, supply chain monitoring
  • HR analytics: workforce metrics, employee turnover, monitoring of recruitment processes

  • User-centered design – assessment of needs, interviews, and iterative design
  • Solutions that support business decision-making without unnecessary complexity

Governance and continuous development

  • Management of access rights and data security in large environments
  • Report automation and scheduled refreshes
  • Leveraging Copilot and other AI capabilities to enhance reporting efficiency

Power BI admin report

  • Norrin’s own solution for reporting monitoring

Norrin has developed a Power BI–based management report that provides organizations with a ready-made solution for monitoring and managing the use of reports and the reporting environment. The report includes key metrics and views that can be customized to meet customer-specific needs.

The solution improves understanding of the current Power BI environment and immediately delivers added value to support decision-making. With the tool, it is possible to quickly gain an overall view of the Power BI environment, insights into data sources, tables, columns, and measures within reports, performance, how and by whom reports are used, as well as visibility into licenses, security groups, and workspace users.

After implementation, actions to improve governance can be analyzed quickly.

Power BI and Microsoft Fabric create a seamless whole

Microsoft Fabric is a unified data platform that brings together data integration, storage, and analytics. Power BI is a central part of this ecosystem. A reporting layer deeply integrated into Fabric that fully leverages Fabric’s capacity.

Companies increasingly have questions about how Power BI and Fabric relate to each other. In short: Power BI is an integral part of Fabric, and the technologies are tightly connected. Norrin has extensive experience in Fabric projects, enabling the delivery of modern, scalable, and long-lasting solutions.

Frequently asked questions of Power BI

Can I share Power Bi reports with external users?

Power BI or Fabric reports can be shared with external users in several ways. You can invite external users as guests and securely share reports or apps through the Power BI service. Reports can also be securely embedded into, for example, a website or portal using Power BI Embedded or Fabric capacity. Other options are also available, but their suitability should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

What is Power BI Copilot? Can reports be done automatically?

Power BI Copilot works for all user groups, but its use cases vary depending on the user role.

For business users, Copilot can, for example, summarize the key points of a report or topic and answer questions asked directly from the data.

For citizen developers, Copilot can suggest content for reports, create report pages, summarize the contents of a semantic model, produce visual summaries, write DAX queries, help with learning DAX, and add descriptions to measures in the semantic model.

For data professionals, Copilot can automate repetitive tasks and support activities such as documenting semantic models or reports.

What licenses are needed for Power BI Copilot?

Power BI Copilot requires at least an F2-level Fabric capacity. Depending on usage needs, it may be necessary to choose a higher capacity to ensure smooth Copilot usage and sufficient performance under load.

Do I still need a Power BI Pro license in the Fabric world?

Yes. You still need a Power BI Pro license to create, share, and collaborate on Power BI reports and content, even when using Fabric. However, consuming content in high-capacity subscriptions (for example, F64 or higher) is also possible with Power BI Free licenses.

How to choose the right Fabric capacity (F SKU) for reporting and other use cases?

Choosing the right capacity depends on usage needs and workload. Microsoft and your account team can help assess your requirements based on actual usage. In addition, trying out Fabric and using the Microsoft Fabric Capacity Metrics app provide concrete insights into capacity utilization and support making the right choice.
